A Minneapolis Night Out

Minneapolis has a nightlife scene to keep you up until the early hours of the morning. It does not matter what you prefer to do on your night out, Minneapolis has it all. Here is a select listing of places to visit on your venture into the nightlife of Minneapolis:

Barley John’s Brew Pub-
This low-key brew pub might not look like much but their beers are astounding. It is certainly a neighborhood bar with a hidden secret. This is for people who are just looking for good beer, no gimmicks and no need for an overly classy atmosphere.

Saffron-
If you’re looking for the perfect happy hour, then Saffron is the place to go. It is located in the Warehouse District and it is one of the Twin Cities’ Originals. Their cocktail menu is exciting and unique. Enjoy the food at Saffron, as well, because you’ll be hard-pressed to pick just one thing on their delicious menu.

The Bulldog-
This beer haven has spread all over the Twin Cities’ map and rightfully so because their beer list is divine. It has great American food and there are over 100 different beers to choose from. They also have shuffleboards and flat screens so you can spend hours in their beer den.

Tiger Sushi-
This is one of the largest sushi bars in the Twin Cities and it is fitting for a trendy night out in Uptown. The drinks are good and with the wraparound glass façade, it is a place to see and be seen.

Enjoy your night out in Minneapolis!

Conferences in Minneapolis

Minneapolis draws a bigger crowd than some may expect.  While you are around be sure to take advantage of some of the great conferences and conventions that pass through, many on a regular basis.  There are some really amazing options and we recommend not just taking a look at our brief sampling, but searching also for something specific to your field (if it doesn't fit one below).  There is no better way to create a network of contacts and support than attending these conferences and getting to know your peers face-to-face.

International Congress on Energy -
10/16/11-10/21/11
Minneapolis Convention Center

This is a great conference focused on discussing energy policies, in particular finding sustainable, clean and accessible energy supplies.  This is the second annual iteration of this convention and will bring together people from all sides of the issue, business executives, politicians, scientists, engineers, technicians, and even more.  Get to really know the industry and the options from nuclear and solar to hydrogen and biofuel.  It is a great opportunity to learn about or stay up on the latest technology and make contacts.

Healthy Life Expo -
10/22/11-10/23/11
Minneapolis Convention Center

This is an event open to everyone.  It is very cheap too, only $6!  There will be various expositions, seminars and discussions on how to improve your health and general well-being.  There are nutrition lectures and plenty of demonstrations by people from all sections of the health industry including massage therapists, trainers, beauticians and more.  This is a great opportunity to have some fun and educate yourself on natural methods that lead to greater health benefits.

Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Expo -
11/18/11-11/20/11
Midwest Mountaineering

Head to Midwest Mountaineering for a fun time at their outdoor expo.  They have all sorts of activities from a great program of presenters on various experiences in the outdoors around the world, to films from Banff Mountain Film Festival to great food and items on sale.  This event has happened 52 times already so it promises to be a wonderful one.  We highly recommend the world famous Banff showings and the demos are always great.  Also be sure to take advantage of the deals on equipment while you can.

Health Food in Minneapolis

While spending time in Minneapolis, whether you have special dietary concerns, or just like to eat healthy, you have a world of options.  The local Co-op scene in particular is huge. There is a lot of locally-grown food available, as well as plenty of vegan, diet, gluten-free, organic, etc. options.

Seward Co-op -

This grocery store and deli is a cooperative that sells high-quality natural foods.  They have been around for almost 40 years, and focus on bringing in local produce.  It has grown from a small group of volunteers to a 13,000 sq ft store with over 8,000 members!

Ecopolitan -

This is more than just a natural foods store - they have a restaurant, a spa, a store, a health center and plenty of helpful publications.  Their shop provides raw food, medicine, kitchen tools, and supplements.  You can really find about anything you'd want there.  If you just want to grab something to go the restaurant/bar has organic, vegan food!

Wedge Community Co-op -

The Wedge Co-op is just a few years younger than Seward, and they have a similar story.  They rose from a handful of people to over 14,000 members.  They bring in a lot of organic, natural food.  They also were the first Certified Organic Retailer in the state.  They even offer educational programs for local school children on sustainable farming.

Music Venues in Minneapolis

While you are in Minneapolis be sure to head out for a night of live music.  There is a little of something for everyone from the big tours to smaller venues with more intimate acts.  Prices for both national and local shows are generally very sensible.

Xcel Energy Center -

While technically in Saint Paul, the Xcel Energy Center is the local hockey arena (for the Minnesota Wild) that converts into a stadium venue.  It is about to turn 11 years old and holds just under 20,000 people.  They draw popular performers, including Katy Perry, Adele and Andre Rieu.  If you are looking for a fun, pop/rock, big-time show this is your place.

First Avenue -

Spend at night at this iconic club.  It is a smaller venue, with a lot of variety.  They have a mixture of bigger national acts and local unknowns.  Their prices are very reasonable, so even if you don't know the band it is worth checking out, they are usually very good too.  If you'd rather just go dancing for a night First Avenue is also great for that.

Cabooze -

Cabooze is an eclectic venue with all kinds of shows.  They have relatively low prices, and a range of acts.  You can check out a local band for $5 or catch George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic.  They also host a lot of themed parties, so that might be worth looking into as well.  This is a great place to take a night off and enjoy yourself.

Walk On By…

Frequent business travelers, especially “Road Warrior” types who are away from home for long periods of time, know how tough it is to keep in shape when work is the priority morning, noon and night. But if you are fortunate enough to be located temporarily in Minneapolis, there’s no excuse not to squeeze in a walk or a run to keep fit. And in Minneapolis, you are never more than a few blocks away from a great place to walk or run.

Mississippi West Bank
If you’re downtown, the riverfront is a great place to walk. Start at Minnehaha Park south of town and follow the river up to Old Saint Anthony. With very little traffic in the way and plenty of river views and history to soak up, it’s a great, convenient route for walking or running!

Learn While You Walk
If you’d rather combine your exercise with a history lesson, the City of Minneapolis offers guided walking tours during the summer months. These tours are generally conducted on the weekends, although if you are free during the week there are some scheduled then too. Check out the local architecture, great scenery and historic landmarks at locations throughout the city. For specific tour information, dates and details, check out the 2011 Minneapolis Summer Walking and Biking Tours page.

Skyways and Tunnels
Even during the cold, snowy winter months, or when conditions are at their worst in Minneapolis, the downtown tunnels and skyways provide the perfect safe place to power-walk or run. There are miles of connected loops and routes to explore, extending out from downtown in all directions – so you’ll never get bored.

Go Fish!

Staying in Minneapolis for an extended period of time for business? If you find yourself with a day off or even a few hours, why not treat yourself to some well-deserved relaxation at one of the local fishing spots? Especially during the summer months, there are many beautiful lakes to choose from, as well as the Mighty Mississippi. There are also plenty of bait and tackle shops in the area to outfit you properly for your excursion.

Where to go? How about these suggestions:

Cedar Lake
Located in the chain of lakes region at Cedar Lake Parkway and Basswood Road (yes you can catch bass there) Cedar Lake offers tree-lined shores and a fishing dock on the west side.  Anglers also have the opportunity to catch northern pike and muskie!

Lake Harriet
A beautiful lake in the Chain of Lakes , Lake Harriet has 344 acres of water and 2 fishing docks. For an extra treat, plan breakfast or lunch at the Bread & Pickle for some healthy and delicious food grown locally. You can find Lake Harriet at 4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway in Minneapolis.

Minnehaha Falls Park
Prefer to fish the river? Then check out the catch and release walleye fishery area where the Minnehaha Creek flows into the Mississippi. If you’re staying in Minneapolis during the spring, you can also catch crappies and stripers under the wooden footbridge nearby. The park is located at 4801 South Minnehaha Park Drive in Minneapolis.

While you're enjoying the beautiful weather and the stunning scenery, don't forget to work on your story about the "one that got away".

Minneapolis Attractions

During your stay in Minneapolis check out one of the great cultural attractions and explore a little more if you want a trip farther out for some great scenery.

Located on the University of Minnesota campus, this museum has been around since 1934.  It was designed by one of the most well known American architects, Frank Gehry.  The museum’s collection is generally categorized as modern art, but varies greatly.  The building in-and-of itself is worth a trip to see!

A performing arts landmark, the Guthrie Theater has won Tony awards for its work!  The building has won numerous architectural awards.  The theater was built with the intention of operating in a way very different from Broadway, but to provide the same kind of quality.  Their upcoming season ranges from Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams to Noël Coward.

The public, Minneapolis Institute of Arts is a great way to spend some time, and it can be a little or a lot, as it is free!  If time is short it is the perfect way to take in a little culture without breaking the bank.  The art start even before you enter the building, when you see the neo-classical façade by famous New York architecture firm McKim, Mead & White.  The institute was founded in 1883 with the building being completed in 1915.  From Chinese jade to Titian to Georgia O’Keefe, this huge collection has something for everyone!

Check out one of the biggest sculpture gardens in any city in the United States!  The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden was built on the grounds of a former military drilling field, with the first sign of its future coming in 1913 with the planting of a floral garden.  The Sculpture Garden was opened in 1988, and has been growing since – both in terms of area and breadth of exhibitions.  Stroll through the 11 acre grounds and look for the Cowles Conservatory and work by Frank Gehry or Oldenburg/van Bruggen.

Professional Sports in Minneapolis

Take an afternoon or evening to head out to Target field or Target Center, or one of the other great venues in Minneapolis to get a taste of Minnesota sports culture!  Below are a few of the offerings, but don't limit yourself, there is even a professional lacrosse team!

Minnesota Twins – Target Field

The Minnesota Twins play in the MLB’s American League.  The name refers to the Twin Cities – Minneapolis and its neighbor St. Paul – although they play at the brand new Target Field in downtown Minneapolis.  They have won the AL three times and won the World Series twice since moving to Minneapolis from Washington D.C.  Grab your Homer Hanky and head to the beautiful new field for a game!

Minnesota Timberwolves – Target Center

The T-Wolves are in the Western Conference of the NBA.  The most notable player in Timberwolves history is Kevin Garnett who led them to eight straight playoff appearances, making it to the Western Conference Finals in 2004.  Garnett is now gone and they are looking to build a new team.  It is also worth checking out their sister team, WNBA Minnesota Lynx.

Minnesota Vikings – Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome

The Vikings are an NFL team in the NFC.  They have a great record, winning on NFL championship before the merger with the AFL (pre-Super Bowl), and have been in the playoffs 24 times, putting them third in the league.  They have strong rivalries with the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers.

Minnesota Wild – Xcel Energy Center

The Minnesota Wile play NHL Hockey in the Western Conference.  They are a relatively new team, only starting to play in 2000.  In 2002-2003, they made the playoffs for the first time and made it to the finals before falling to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Minneapolis Welcome!

Minneapolis, Minnesota, or the “City of Lakes” is one of the 50 largest cities in the United States!  Even more impressively, when combined with St. Paul to form the Twin Cities, it is among the 20 largest metropolitan areas.  Minneapolis lies on the Mississippi River, and is, indeed a city dependent on water.  It is historically a mill city, but currently the economy is centered around commerce finance, and industry.  There are six Fortune 500 companies based in Minneapolis, including Target, U.S. Bancorp, Ameriprise Financial and PepsiAmericas.  The educational environment in Minneapolis is influenced heavily by the University of Minnesota, a Big Ten school.  Welcome to Minneapolis!
